The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Hygen Hound, or Hygenhund, is a strongly built Norwegian dog with a slightly elongated body. It has drooping ears, dark eyes and short, dense hair. Less tall and lightly built than some continental hounds, it conveys strength and endurance. Several colours occur, often with white, so no single patch pattern identifies it.
The breed takes its name from Hans Fredrik Hygen, a Norwegian breeder active in the nineteenth century. He developed dogs suited to local hunting and difficult climatic conditions. Sustained tracking ability, including through winter landscapes, was important.
In daily interaction it may seem calm and unhurried. Outdoors an interesting scent brings clear animation and methodical ground investigation. It can continue searching far from its handler, showing independence. Its loud voice lets people follow its position among trees.
