The Hovawart is a large dog with a strong, somewhat elongated outline and a long, slightly wavy coat. It comes in three colours: black, black and tan, and blond. It has drooping ears and a richly feathered tail. Males usually differ clearly from females in build, particularly head size and body substance.
The breed's name comes from medieval German words meaning a farm guardian. Modern breeding, however, began in 1922, using similar-type dogs found on farms alongside breeds including German Shepherd Dogs, Newfoundlands and Leonbergers. The Hovawart was recognised as a breed in 1937. The old name describes a working tradition but does not prove uninterrupted, documented breeding since medieval times.
The Hovawart is attentive to its surroundings and strongly attached to household members. In new situations it usually assesses events first rather than immediately seeking contact. It can cooperate with people while retaining initiative and determination. Its good scenting abilities are also used in tracking and rescue work. Particular interest can quickly turn calm observation into action.
