Trakehner — size comparison — facts and sources

The Trakehner has a refined head, long neck, pronounced withers and sloping shoulder. It is usually lighter than many other German warmbloods. A balanced outline, clean legs and springy movement give it a distinctly ridden character.

Its roots lie in former East Prussia. Regional working-horse breeding developed a type valued for athleticism, endurance and elegance. The modern programme preserves this distinct tradition while selecting for sport.

Trakehners are often attentive, sensitive and quick to respond. Small changes in rider aids can produce clear responses, allowing precise guidance within a developed partnership. They are used in dressage, jumping and eventing. Depending on the line, important qualities include gaits, take-off ability or an efficient gallop and willingness over cross-country obstacles.
