The Thoroughbred has long, fine legs, prominent withers and a deep chest. A sloping shoulder, powerful hindquarters and an elongated outline support a long, fast gallop. Its coat is short and fine, with muscles clearly visible beneath the skin.
The breed developed in Britain for racing. Almost all modern male lines trace to three stallions imported around the turn of the eighteenth century. Thoroughbred identifies a specific breed with documented ancestry; the Polish colloquial name is folblut.
Racing selection established speed, energy and a readiness for intense effort. Thoroughbreds are often sensitive to the rider’s aids and respond quickly to changing situations. Beyond racing, they are used in eventing, show jumping and leisure riding. Moving from racing to other ridden work requires learning a different way of working and responding to a rider.
