The Tennessee Walking Horse has a long, sloping shoulder, a strong back and a deep chest. Its head is balanced with small ears, and its outline supports a long stride. Many coat colours and patterns occur.
It originated in central Tennessee from various American working horses, including Standardbreds, Morgans, Saddlebreds and Thoroughbreds. It was bred as a comfortable mount for long rides and daily work. The natural running walk became its defining feature.
In this smooth four-beat gait, hind hooves overstep forehoof prints and the head moves rhythmically with the stride. The rider experiences relatively little vertical jolting. Walkers are usually gentle, calm in contact and willing to move forward. Uses chiefly include trekking, leisure and competitions displaying characteristic gait quality.
