The Suffolk Punch has a broad, deep body, a strong neck and powerful hindquarters. Its legs are almost free of long feathering, making their structure clearly visible. The breed occurs exclusively in various chestnut shades.
It originates in the English county of Suffolk, where it developed mainly for agricultural work. Its compact, heavy type suited tasks requiring great pulling power and steady effort. Its distinct appearance and consistent role as a heavy farm horse were preserved.
At work the Suffolk should move energetically, straight and rhythmically. Willingness to cooperate calmly and sustain a steady pace is valued. Today it occurs in shows, traditional driving and farm work. Its characteristic chestnut coat and stocky build help identify this British draught breed.
