The Shetland pony has a small head, a short, strong back and a deep body on sturdy legs. A full mane and tail emphasise its stocky outline. In winter, it develops a dense double coat that reduces exposure to wind and rain. The breed’s native standard sets an upper height limit of 107 cm.
It developed on the Shetland Islands in a cool, windy environment with limited food. These conditions shaped a small, hardy and strong pony. Relative to its height, a Shetland can perform considerable pulling work.
Shetlands are generally quick-witted, alert and independent. They remember familiar tasks and routes to places that interest them. They can express their intentions clearly around people. Today they are mainly ridden by small children, used in light harness and presented in shows.
