The horses of Sable Island form a free-ranging population whose presence on the island dates to the eighteenth century. They descend from domestic horses and live without regular husbandry.
They feed mainly on dune grasses, especially marram grass. In part of the island they use ponds; where these are absent, they can dig hollows in the sand down to groundwater. In winter they shelter on the lee side of dunes and use reserves accumulated during better months.
They live in family groups and groups of males. Their home ranges overlap around good feeding grounds and watering places.
