Rocky Mountain Horse — size comparison — facts and sources

The Rocky Mountain Horse is medium-sized, with a deep chest and strong back. Chocolate-coloured horses with pale manes and tails are best known, although other colours occur. Its principal working characteristic is a natural, even four-beat gait.

It developed in the Appalachians as a versatile workhorse and comfortable mount for long journeys. Selection combined a calm temperament with movement reducing vertical jolts felt by the rider.

Usually gentle and attentive, it readily undertakes steady trail work. Its smooth rhythm makes it particularly valued for leisure and trail riding. The distinctive silver dilution also has genetic significance: it is associated with a risk of congenital eye abnormalities, making it more than a colour characteristic.
