American Quarter Horse — size comparison — facts and sources

The American Quarter Horse has a broad chest, a short, strong back and heavily muscled hindquarters. Its compact build supports rapid starts, stops and changes of direction. Types vary within the breed, from muscular western horses to taller, lighter animals selected for racing.

The name comes from quarter-mile races popular in America since colonial times. Later development was closely linked to ranches and cattle work. Thoroughbreds also contributed to breeding, and the American Quarter Horse Association was founded in 1940.

Quarter Horses often combine calm responses to routine handling with very fast action during a task. Cattle-working lines are valued for observing and anticipating an animal’s movement. The breed is widely used in cutting, reining, barrel racing, racing and leisure riding.
