The Peruvian Paso has a strong, proportionate body, high-carried neck and abundant mane and tail. Its most distinctive feature is a smooth four-beat gait. The forelegs make a recognisable outward movement called termino.
A distinct Peruvian breed, it developed chiefly for comfortable riding. NAPHA's standard calls it the Peruvian Horse. Despite the similar name, its breeding history and movement differ from those of the Paso Fino.
Energy, endurance and willingness to cooperate are valued in work. An even rhythm and limited vertical back movement create a characteristic floating sensation. The breed is particularly associated with trail riding, leisure and gait shows. Its footfall pattern makes it as recognisable in motion as in outline.
