The Paso Fino has a balanced, moderately small body, a long mane and tail and elevated head carriage. Its natural four-beat gait is characteristic: each leg touches down separately while the back remains relatively steady.
It developed from horses brought to America by the Spanish. Puerto Rico and Colombia became particularly important centres, selecting smooth, comfortable movement over generations. Modern lines retain traces of regional breeding directions.
It is usually energetic, attentive and responsive to aids while cooperative. It can take rapid small steps with little forward travel or cover more ground per stride. It is used in gait displays, trekking and leisure, with smoothness its principal working quality.
