The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The New Forest Pony has a strong body, a well-laid shoulder and sound, sturdy limbs. Its build is usually lighter and more suited to riding than that of heavy mountain ponies. Hard hooves and free movement are important breed features.
It originates in southern England. Part of the population still grazes freely in the New Forest, maintaining its traditional association with the landscape. The horses have owners, and open grazing is a way of keeping them. The studbook sets a maximum height of 148 cm.
It is usually intelligent, attentive and willing to undertake varied tasks. It moves confidently over terrain, while good movement and jumping ability favour sporting use. New Forest Ponies occur in leisure riding, jumping, dressage and trekking, particularly as versatile mounts for younger riders.
