Morgan — size comparison — facts and sources

The Morgan has a compact, muscular body, a strong neck and a distinctly elevated head carriage. Its movement is lively and springy, with proportions combining strength and suitability for riding. A broad chest and well-connected body emphasise the practical character of this American breed.

All Morgans descend from the stallion Figure, later known by his owner’s name as Justin Morgan’s horse. His offspring were valued for versatility, working on farms, pulling vehicles and carrying riders. It is among the oldest breeds developed in the United States.

Morgans are generally intelligent, sociable and highly willing to cooperate. They readily take on tasks, often retaining a lively, enthusiastic approach to movement. Today they appear in driving, dressage, western disciplines, endurance and leisure riding. This variety suits the history of a horse expected to perform many kinds of work.
