The Missouri Fox Trotting Horse has a proportionate head, a sloping shoulder, a deep body and a short, strong back. Its defining feature is the fox trot, a broken diagonal gait. The front legs move in a walk-like rhythm while the hind legs trot, reducing vertical jolting.
The breed developed in the Ozark Mountains for work, transport and long rides. Selection focused on comfortable movement, endurance and the ability to cover uneven roads. Its natural gait became the foundation of a distinct breeding identity.
The fox trotter is valued for an even pace and willingness to keep travelling for long periods. On trails it combines capability with smooth movement for comfortable distance riding. Today it serves mainly in trekking, leisure riding and events showcasing the quality of its characteristic gait.
