Lusitano — size comparison — facts and sources

The Lusitano has a balanced, almost square outline, strong neck and rounded hindquarters. Its head profile is often slightly convex. Long, prominent withers and a deep chest complete a build suited to balance and agility.

This Portuguese Iberian breed developed within a tradition of precise riding and work requiring rapid turns. Its standard preserves a baroque type and natural capacity for collection. It is closely associated with Portuguese equestrian culture.

Usually bold, energetic and highly attentive to its rider, it can shift weight onto its hindquarters, shorten its stride and change direction while maintaining engagement. These qualities are valued in dressage, in-hand work and advanced classical exercises. Modern uses also include sport and leisure.
