The Lipizzaner has a strong neck, a broad chest and powerful hindquarters. Its balanced baroque outline supports collection: shifting more weight onto the hind legs. Most adults are grey, although foals are usually born dark and gradually lighten.
The breed originated at the Lipica stud in the sixteenth century. Its history is linked to European court-horse breeding and classical dressage. Pedigree lines and the type of a ceremonial horse capable of precise, balanced work were preserved.
Lipizzaners are generally intelligent, attentive and energetic. They can remember complex sequences of aids and perform precise exercises requiring strength and coordination. Best known for classical dressage, they are also driven. Their mature abilities develop gradually through years of work and increasing strength.
