Irish Cob — size comparison — facts and sources

The Irish Cob has a broad chest, a short, strong back and muscular hindquarters. Substantial bone and long feathering give a heavy appearance. Mane and tail are abundant. Piebald and skewbald horses are most recognisable, but other colours also occur.

Traveller communities developed it for hauling wagons and everyday work. They needed strength, endurance and calm handling close to people. Gypsy Cob, Gypsy Horse, Gypsy Vanner and Tinker are also associated names; the Irish studbook uses Irish Cob.

A gentle, willing temperament matters strongly in the standard. It usually responds calmly to familiar tasks while moving with liveliness and energy. It is used in driving, leisure and trekking, where a steady pace, strength and cooperation are valued.
