Hokkaido horse — size comparison — facts and sources

The Hokkaido horse, called dosanko, is associated with transport on Japan’s northern island. Fishermen brought ancestors from Honshu during the Edo period. Animals left on Hokkaido had to survive local winters.

Valued in mountainous terrain difficult for vehicles, they grazed bamboo grasses among other foods. Strong bodies and dense manes are characteristic.
