Hanoverian — size comparison — facts and sources

The Hanoverian has an athletic outline, well-developed muscles and powerful hindquarters. A long neck, pronounced withers and sloping shoulder support free movement. Modern lines differ according to selection for dressage, jumping or eventing.

Breeding is linked to northern Germany and the Celle stud, founded in 1735. Earlier horses served agriculture, transport and the military. After the Second World War, selection shifted towards sport, using breeds including Trakehners and Thoroughbreds.

Hanoverians are generally energetic, attentive and trainable. Breeding values rideability and willingness to perform tasks requiring strength, balance and precision. Dressage lines emphasise gait quality, while jumping lines emphasise take-off power and capable obstacle clearance.
