Haflinger — size comparison — facts and sources

The Haflinger has a compact, balanced body, a deep chest and strong legs. Chestnut colouring with a pale mane and tail is a consistent feature. The modern type combines a sturdy build with a lighter head, free movement and clear suitability for riding.

It comes from Tyrol. The founding stallion is considered to be 249 Folie, born in 1874 to an Arabian sire and a local mare. Mountain work favoured strength, sure-footedness and efficiency. Breeding gradually placed greater emphasis on sporting and leisure abilities.

Haflingers are generally sociable, intelligent and determined. They readily tackle varied tasks, often combining activity with calm behaviour in familiar surroundings. Uses include driving, trekking, dressage, jumping, western disciplines and therapeutic riding. This variety reflects the breed’s practical working character.
