The Garrano is a native horse of northern Portugal, associated with the mountains of Minho and Peneda-Gerês. It has a short, strong neck, low withers, a broad head with a straight or slightly concave profile, a compact body and strong legs. A bay coat with a black mane, tail and lower legs is typical.
Part of the population lives in extensive herds in semi-natural areas, but the breed also has a tradition of work, driving and a distinctive gait known as passo travado. Garrano conservation includes both managed breeding and preservation of the conditions in its traditional landscape.
