The Friesian horse has a strong, rectangular body, a high-set arched neck and an expressive head. Its black coat contrasts with a full, often wavy mane and tail. Long hair also covers the lower legs. Its energetic, elevated action is particularly striking in movement.
It comes from Friesland in the Netherlands. A studbook was founded in 1879 to protect the local breed. After a severe decline in the early twentieth century, breeding focused for a time on light and medium farm work. Driving and riding later became more prominent.
Friesians are generally attentive and willing to cooperate. Their strength and expressive movement make them recognisable in harness, dressage and displays. Modern breeding develops their suitability both for riding and for driving.
