Fjord horse — size comparison — facts and sources

The Fjord horse has a broad forehead, a strong neck, a deep body and powerful legs. Characteristic dun colouring occurs in several shades. A dark stripe follows the back and centre of the mane; the traditional upright trim clearly reveals the contrast between its dark middle and pale edges.

It is a native Norwegian breed associated with farm work and travel over uneven ground. Its compact type, strength and characteristic colouring with primitive markings were preserved. The Norwegian breed centre describes five dun shades.

Fjords are generally bold, calm and attentive to people. Their short, strong build suits both draught work and riding. They are now used in driving, trekking, leisure and therapeutic riding. Sure-footedness and an even pace are valued on rough paths.
