The Fell Pony has a compact outline, small head, broad forehead and strong back. Powerful legs and hard hooves support efficient movement. An abundant mane and tail and moderate feathering underline its native northern type.
It comes from northern England, especially Cumbria. It developed as a useful upland pony, valued for strength, endurance and sure movement along uneven paths. The standard preserves a small stature, with an upper limit of approximately 142 cm.
Usually intelligent, gentle and willing to work, it readily maintains a steady walk and can move energetically and springily. It is used for riding, trail work and driving. Strength and agility allow varied tasks despite its relatively small frame.
