The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Criollo has a compact, muscular body, broad chest and short back. Strong hindquarters, solid legs and hard hooves suit work in open country. A low centre of gravity helps with rapid turns.
It descends from Iberian horses in South America. Over generations these horses adapted to local conditions, while breeders selected animals useful on farms and with cattle. Populations in different countries retain a shared type with some regional variation.
Usually bold, energetic and enduring, it can work for long periods across country and accelerate, stop and turn quickly around cattle. Independence, sure-footedness and economical movement are valued. It remains an important ranch horse and trail-riding partner.
