Connemara pony — size comparison — facts and sources
The Connemara pony has a broad forehead, deep body, strong back and powerful hindquarters. Compact but retaining useful ridden proportions, it is often grey, although other colours occur. The standard sets a height range of 128 to 148 cm.
It comes from western Ireland, where uneven terrain and harsh weather favoured a resilient, athletic type. Breeding combined native hardiness with movement quality and sporting ability. It became one of Ireland’s best-known riding ponies.
Connemaras are generally attentive, sensible and willing. Strong hindquarters aid take-off, making them especially valued in jumping and eventing. They also work in dressage, leisure and long trail rides. Sure, considered foot placement remains an important advantage on difficult paths.
