The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Clydesdale is tall and substantial, with a broad forehead, large ears and pronounced withers. Strong legs support a powerful body and often carry extensive white markings. Silky feathering, a broad facial blaze and energetic limb action create its recognisable appearance.
The breed originated in Scotland’s Clyde valley for heavy draught work. Breeding developed horses capable of pulling substantial loads while moving freely and efficiently. The original studbook was established in 1877.
Clydesdales are generally gentle in contact and willing to work. Movement can be lively and rhythmic, differing from the impression of sheer weight when standing. Today they are used for driving, displays and leisure, and sometimes forestry and farm work.
