The Camargue is a small, strong horse with a broad head, powerful neck and deep chest. Tough limbs and hooves suit uneven ground. Adults are grey, although foals are born dark and lighten gradually.
It originates in the Rhône delta wetlands of southern France. Its history is tied to local grazing and cattle work. Wet ground and outdoor life helped preserve a hardy, economical build and efficient movement.
Usually alert, independent and enduring, it can react quickly to cattle, turn rapidly and maintain balance on difficult ground. It remains a mount for local herders and a popular trail horse, closely associated with the French delta landscape.
