Appaloosa — size comparison — facts and sources

The Appaloosa has a strong, athletic body. Coat patterns vary from extensive spotting to a pale blanket over the hindquarters. Other characteristic features include mottled muzzle skin, visible white sclera around the eye and vertically striped hooves. Registered horses do not all have equally conspicuous coat patterns.

The breed’s history is linked to horse breeding by the Nez Perce people of north-western North America. Strong, enduring horses capable in mountainous terrain were valued. Appaloosa developed from the expression A Palouse Horse, referring to the Palouse region.

Appaloosas are generally attentive, intelligent and willing to take on varied tasks. They combine agility in quick turns with suitability for longer rides. Their use in cattle work, western events, endurance, jumping and leisure reflects the breed’s diverse breeding directions.
