The American Saddlebred has a long, high-set neck, pronounced withers and an elegant outline. Head carriage is elevated and movement energetic and springy. The overall impression is alertness and readiness to respond.
The breed developed in the United States from horses called Kentucky Saddlers. Local comfortable-gaited horses were combined with Thoroughbreds, Morgans and other working breeds. Shows became increasingly important in the nineteenth century, and the pedigree organisation was founded in 1891.
Saddlebreds are generally lively, sensitive and highly attentive to people. Three- and five-gaited horses occur, judged in different classes. Beyond striking ridden displays, they are used for driving, leisure and sport. Work requiring rhythm, precise responses and enthusiastic movement suits them.
