American Miniature Horse — size comparison — facts and sources

The American Miniature Horse has the proportions of a scaled-down horse: a small, refined head, balanced body and correctly formed legs. Many colours occur. AMHA sets a maximum height of 86.4 cm, measured to the base of the last mane hair, and excludes dwarfism characteristics from its standard.

American miniature breeding drew on several sources of small horses and ponies, including Shetlands. Selection reduced height while preserving proportional conformation and free movement. Modern miniatures vary in colour and type.

Usually curious, attentive and interested in human contact, they take part in conformation shows, groundwork and in-hand obstacle classes. They are also used for light driving, where rhythm, responsiveness and willingness to move forward matter.
