The Akhal-Teke has an elongated, lean outline, long legs and a high-set neck. The chest is narrow but deep, the skin fine, and the mane and tail often sparse. Many horses have a distinctive metallic coat sheen, particularly apparent in pale colours.
The breed comes from Central Asia, in present-day Turkmenistan. Its development was associated with a dry climate and long-distance use. Selection established a light build, economical movement and considerable endurance, alongside a highly distinctive appearance.
Akhal-Tekes are generally alert, intelligent and sensitive to how they are approached. They quickly notice changes in signals and human behaviour. They may form strong relationships with familiar riders while remaining more reserved with strangers. They are used in endurance, dressage, eventing and leisure riding, where athleticism and sustained effort are valued.
