The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Hanoverian Scent Hound is a strong, stocky dog with a broad head, long drooping ears and a deep chest. Its short coat is usually reddish, sometimes with dark brindling. It is heavier and more substantial than the Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound. Its focused expression and calm movement suit its speciality of precise tracking.
It descends from old tracking dogs led by hunters on long leashes. The spread of firearms increased the importance of finding animals wounded by a shot. Breeding therefore reinforced a good nose, distinguishing the correct trail from others and persistence in following it. The Hanoverian Scent Hound remains a dog with a clearly defined task, its history closely linked to specialised hunting.
It is generally balanced and confident, while sensitive and strongly attached to its own handler. It can be selective in new relationships without immediately showing affection. It can concentrate on one activity for a very long time, setting other stimuli aside. It patiently investigates successive clues, remaining attentive even when few are available.
