The Halden Hound is a Norwegian dog with a strong but not overly heavy build. It has long legs, drooping ears and short hair. Black and tan areas complement its white coat, making it resemble some British hounds from afar. Its outline is more elongated than stocky, with free movement suited to sustained work.
The breed is associated with southeastern Norway and takes its name from Halden. It developed within the local hare-hunting tradition, in which a dog independently found and followed scent. It retained a local character and much less popularity than hounds widely distributed outside Scandinavia.
With familiar people it can be friendly and calm. Outdoors its persistence becomes apparent: it may repeatedly return to an interesting place, searching for the continuing trail. A discovered trail can completely absorb its attention. After activity it readily returns to quietly accompanying its people.
