The Griffon Nivernais is a strong scent hound with a rough, tousled coat. A beard, bushy eyebrows and dark hairs mixed with lighter ones give it a rugged appearance. It has drooping ears and strong legs, and its movement retains the stamina needed in dense thickets. Its coat looks natural and uneven, without sharply divided patches of uniform colour.
The modern breed was recreated in the Nièvre region from surviving local dogs. Around the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Vendéen Griffon, Foxhound and Otterhound blood was also introduced. The breed club was founded in 1925. Older accounts link its ancestors to former French royal hounds, but their exact genealogy is less certain than the documented restoration of the modern population.
The Griffon Nivernais is independent, courageous and persistent. It readily enters difficult terrain to investigate a scent, and a discovered trail can hold its attention for a long time. Determination combined with judgement is valued in encounters with game. It can be stubborn with people, particularly when it considers a task unfinished. It can work in a small group of dogs while retaining considerable initiative.
