The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The Griffon Bruxellois is a small, sturdy dog with a short muzzle, large eyes and a red, rough coat. A thick beard and moustache give its head an expressive appearance. It has a short body, confident stance and lively movement. Coat texture and colour distinguish it from the closely related Griffon Belge and smooth-coated Petit Brabançon.
All three breeds descend from small dogs called smousje formerly kept around Brussels. They guarded carriages and controlled rodents in stables. Crosses with Pugs and small spaniels during the nineteenth century helped establish the modern type. Queen Marie Henriette of Belgium's interest contributed to their popularity at home and abroad.
It usually follows its person's behaviour closely and readily seeks physical contact. Cheerful and watchful, it likes joining household activities. Curiosity and displeasure are often expressed clearly. In familiar surroundings it can be bold and playful, while new situations prompt attentive investigation.
