The Greyhound is a tall, short-coated sighthound with a very slender outline. It has a deep chest, a tucked-up belly, long legs and muscular thighs. A narrow head and small ears complete its streamlined appearance. Its flexible movement allows rapid acceleration and fast running in open spaces.
Developed in Britain to pursue game by sight, it was selected for speed, agility and the ability to keep prey in view. This hunting tradition later gave rise to racing lines. Modern racing and show Greyhounds may differ, while retaining the characteristic sighthound build.
At home, a Greyhound is often calm, gentle and fond of a comfortable resting place. It may be affectionate with familiar people and reserved with strangers. A rapidly retreating object can still trigger pursuit. Its daily rhythm combines long periods of rest with brief, intense bursts of activity.
