The Greek Harehound is a strong, medium-sized dog with a short black coat and reddish-brown tan markings. It has drooping ears, dark eyes and a deep chest. Its body is capable and its legs well suited to sustained movement over uneven ground. The smooth coat clearly reveals its muscles and proportions.
The breed comes from the Greek tradition of hare hunting. Dogs worked alone or in groups, on lowlands and in mountains. Finding trails on rocky ground, where scent can be harder to follow, was important. Local selection established a resilient hound whose usefulness was assessed chiefly at work rather than by decorative appearance.
It is energetic and becomes deeply engaged in what it scents. It can independently investigate extensive ground, return to a lost trail and repeatedly resume searching. Its loud, resonant voice carries from a distance. When strongly interested in a scent, its attention may shift away from people. Its persistence therefore also appears on ordinary walks, when it spends a long time examining a spot its owner finds unremarkable.
