The Great Dane is one of the tallest dog breeds, with long legs, a slender neck and an elongated, expressive head. Its muscular body moves freely and smoothly. The short, close-fitting coat comes in colours including fawn, brindle, blue, black and harlequin.
The breed developed in Germany from large dogs used to hunt big game, including wild boar. Earlier names described different types, sizes and colours. In 1878 these were brought together under the name Deutsche Dogge, followed by the first standard two years later. The English name Great Dane does not reflect where the modern breed developed.
With familiar people, Great Danes are often affectionate, friendly and eager for close contact. They may be more reserved with strangers, watching before approaching. Young dogs in particular can greet people and join in play with considerable enthusiasm.
