The Grand Anglo-Français Blanc et Noir has a powerful, long-legged build and short hair. Black patches stand out against white. Drooping ears, an elongated head and deep chest emphasise its hound type. Compared with lighter French breeds, it looks particularly strong while retaining freedom of movement.
It descends from dogs called Anglo-Saintongeois, developed in the mid-19th century by crossing Saintonge hounds with English Foxhounds. These crosses served hunting, particularly in large packs. Breeders selected enduring dogs able to cross wet and overgrown terrain.
It can be friendly towards people and cooperate effectively with other dogs. When tracking it becomes determined and persistent. Scents and the voices of other hounds then strongly influence its behaviour.
