The Grand Griffon Vendéen is a large hound with harsh hair, a beard and long, hairy ears. Bushy eyebrows emphasise its attentive gaze. Beneath the tousled coat is a powerful, long-legged dog that should move freely. It belongs to the same Vendée hound family as the smaller Briquet and two Basset breeds.
Its history is linked to old French pack hounds. Local Vendée hounds and other rough-haired dogs, including fawn Breton griffons, contributed to the modern type. Breeding aimed at covering extensive hunting grounds and pursuing larger game. Later selection established the smaller breeds within this regional family.
It is bold, persistent and inclined to take initiative. Thorns and dense scrub do not readily interrupt its search. It can become deeply absorbed in a trail, announcing its position with a loud voice. It may cooperate willingly but does not always await a command before acting; this determination is part of its hunting temperament.
