The Grand Bleu de Gascogne has impressively long ears and an elongated head. Fine black ticking on white gives the coat its characteristic bluish shade, complemented by darker patches and tan markings. It is large and strong but retains the proportions of a hound capable of sustained movement.
It comes from southern and southwestern France, particularly Gascony. Breed tradition connects similar dogs with the packs of Gaston Fébus, Count of Foix, in the 14th century. They hunted animals including wolves, bears and wild boar. The Grand Bleu de Gascogne also contributed significantly to other regional hounds, including smaller varieties.
With people it can be calm, gentle and responsive to guidance. Outdoors it concentrates on scent, and its deep, carrying voice is audible from afar. It works comfortably alongside other dogs and readily joins a pack.
