The Grand Anglo-Français Tricolore is a large, powerful hound with long legs and short hair. White combines with black patches and reddish-brown tan markings. It has an elongated head, drop ears and a deep chest. Its build allows a steady, ground-covering stride for prolonged periods.
It developed in France from local hounds crossed with English Foxhounds. Such matings served large-pack hunts where scenting ability, strength and endurance mattered. The tricolour Grand Anglo-Français is one of several distinct breeds from this tradition, rather than merely a colour variant of any French hound.
It is strongly interested in surrounding scents and movement. In searching it can be persistent, continuing to investigate a trail despite distance from its handler. Cooperation with other dogs is central to its working temperament. It may focus as strongly on the pack's direction and voices as on direct handler signals.
