The Golden Retriever is a strong, balanced dog with a gentle expression and broad muzzle. Its dense coat may be straight or slightly wavy, ranging from pale cream to golden. Longer feathering grows on the legs, chest and underside of the tail. Its free-moving build combines stamina with swimming ability.
The breed developed in Scotland in the second half of the nineteenth century. At Guisachan, Dudley Marjoribanks, later Lord Tweedmouth, bred retrievers for recovering game from land and water. A yellow retriever crossed with a female of the now-extinct Tweed Water Spaniel played an important role. Surviving breeding records helped establish the history and distinguish it from earlier legends.
Goldens are usually friendly, attentive to people and willing to work together. Many enjoy carrying objects, searching ground and playing in water. Young dogs can be especially exuberant and demonstrative. Their sociability and learning ability have also led to roles in assistance and rescue work.
