Glen of Imaal Terrier — size comparison — facts and sources

The Glen of Imaal Terrier is low-set, stocky and surprisingly strong for its height. It has a broad head, elongated body and harsh coat forming a beard and eyebrows. Short, strong legs give it a distinctive appearance. Its outline differs from lightly built, long-legged terriers, yet it retains agility and the ability to move energetically.

Its name comes from the Glen of Imaal in Ireland's County Wicklow. The breed developed as a local farm and hunting dog, useful in varied everyday duties. The region's isolation helped preserve a distinct type selected more for usefulness than striking appearance. Courage, strength and persistence were valued in its work, along with an ability to work without constantly giving voice.

At home the Glen can be gentle, affectionate and less easily excited than many other terriers. It enjoys staying close to its family while retaining its initiative. An interesting target can nevertheless bring a rapid change from quiet rest to decisive action. It is persistent and brave, and its seemingly staid appearance conceals a readiness to chase and determination in overcoming obstacles.
