The Giant Schnauzer is a large, strong dog with an almost square body and a long head. Harsh hair forms characteristic eyebrows and a full beard. A strong neck, deep chest and long legs support free, efficient movement. Black and pepper-and-salt coats are predominant, the latter composed of hairs in different grey shades.
It comes from southern Germany, where large dogs drove cattle and guarded farms, breweries and stores. Around the turn of the twentieth century, breeders began systematically establishing appearance and working qualities. The breed entered the studbook from 1913 and was recognised as a working dog in 1925. Giant Schnauzers later entered service roles and dog sports.
It is watchful, quick to learn and persistent in shared activities. It forms a strong handler bond, watches signals closely and readily takes on new tasks. It may also pursue its own ideas firmly. It is usually more distant with strangers than with family. Confidence and considerable energy are especially visible in movement and vigorous play.
