The scale compares the named dimensions. View direction and measurement points are given for each animal.
The German Medium Spitz has a compact outline, small erect ears and a bushy tail curled over its back. Its dense, stand-off coat forms an abundant neck ruff, while hair on the muzzle and fronts of the legs is shorter. A pointed muzzle and dark eyes give it a bright expression. It is the medium size in the German Spitz family, which also includes larger and smaller varieties.
Its ancestors were farm dogs of Central Europe. They guarded homesteads, accompanied people around buildings and quickly raised the alarm when strangers appeared. Modern breeding organised this population by size and appearance. The Medium Spitz retains common ancestry with other varieties, though its size clearly distinguishes it from the miniature Pomeranian.
It is lively, alert and strongly attached to household members. It enjoys watching their activities, learns routines and quickly picks up new sounds. It often responds by barking, especially when someone approaches a familiar place. It may keep its distance from strangers, while being demonstrative and playful within the family. It combines intelligence with confidence and a keen interest in its surroundings.
