The German Spaniel, or Wachtelhund, is a strong dog with an elongated body and a dense, wavy coat. Its long ears are richly feathered, as are the tail and backs of the legs. Its outline combines strength with the ability to push efficiently through thickets. A dense coat suits work in damp woodland, beside water and in difficult vegetation.
The breed belongs to Germany's tradition of dogs that search for and flush game. Wachtelhund refers to quail, but its duties are much broader. Breeding focused on woodland work, retrieving and finding wounded game. Unlike pointing breeds, selection did not concentrate on indicating game while motionless; active, thorough searching and independence were valued.
The Wachtelhund is lively, persistent and readily engaged in searching. Scents can absorb its attention, and it tackles a task with great enthusiasm. It nevertheless usually remains friendly and receptive to learning, responding attentively to its handler. It enjoys carrying objects, takes an interest in water and readily explores new places. Its activity has a clear purpose: searching and investigating often matter more than running itself.
