The German Shorthaired Pointer is a large, muscular dog with an elongated head and hanging ears. Its short coat lies close to the body, often brown or brown roan, although the standard includes other combinations. It has a deep chest, a strong back and long legs. In motion it resembles an endurance athlete, capable of maintaining a fast pace across country.
It descends from European dogs that indicated birds during hunting with nets and falcons. Firearms increased demand for a versatile helper able to find and retrieve game after the shot. German breeding combined these duties, and the breed’s studbook began in 1897. Working trials helped preserve abilities on both land and water.
It is usually energetic, quick to learn and persistent. It cooperates readily with people and can maintain concentration on an interesting task for a long time. At home it may be affectionate and sociable, while activity quickly directs its attention towards scents and movement. Enthusiasm shows in thorough investigation of the ground and willingness to tackle another task.
